The solo animator has to wear many hats, and being a voice actor is one of them. Your characters have to talk. Each of them will have a different voice. You can get your friends to participate in your project, or you will have to do the voices yourself. I know your friends are awesome, but they might not always be available, so you need to have at least five voices that you can do at all times.
Voice acting is all about changing the pitch of your voice from a low pitch to a high one and ranges within that spectrum. Doing different accents for your character is another technique. You can speed up your voice or slow it down for another effect. Some people talk fast, and some people talk slow.
You can try to impersonate your favorite celebrities. Listen to them on Youtube and record yourself quoting their lines. You can use their mannerisms to get the full effect of the nuances of their voice. It’s all about practice. By the end of the day, you will have like a hundred voices in your arsenal.
Audacity is a free program for PC, Mac, and Linux that you can use to do all of your voice recording. You also have to invest in a USB microphone. Those can range from $30 to $150 on Amazon. Usually, the mic on the computer is not that great, and it picks up a lot of background noise. The mic on the computer is better than nothing just to get your feet wet until you can get a mic. You probably already have a mic laying around the house somewhere, so there you go.
