Sound design is about adding sounds to your project in the editing phase. Background sounds like walking, traffic, doors opening and closing, ect are all part of the sound design. The dialogue can also be edited separately from your animation to get the levels correct, add effects, and make cuts which is also part of the sound design. Sounds play an important role in your production. From the mood to manipulating the visuals, the sound plays a significant role just like the illustrations.
There are a lot of free sounds you can download off of the internet from websites like freesound.org, pixabay.com, and within the Youtube studio. You can also record your own sounds when you can’t find the clip you are looking for on the web. There are also sound packs you can purchase that are high quality and used in big budget productions.
Sometimes, you can trick your audience with sound, and no visual of the event, and the spectator will vision the event happening within their mind. An example would be like in an episode of Archer where you can hear a car crash in the background then you see the aftermath of the crash without actually seeing the event.
Sounds can save you a lot of time because you won’t have to draw and animate a scene. The sound will get the point across on its own. Now you see how important the sounds are? Sound can also get the feelings that you want to project like sadness, happiness, love, excitement, etc.
A one instrument track like a slow violin or flute can make you shed a tear. The trumpet at a high speed tempo can get your adrenaline pumping. A smooth sax will put you in the zone.
